How to pick a right printer for making id cards

Plastic id card printers

But the overall price of plastic id card printers is a little bit higher for small business owner, not just printers itself but also the supplies. Because it is simple to use, you just need to insert a blank PVC card into printer and click “print” button on software, and that is, you can get the card in 30 seconds, no other post-processing needed.

Inkjet/Laser printers
As many people may already have a inkjet or laser printer,  using inkjet or laser printers may be the least cost option for making id cards. All you need are a software which supports sheet printing feature and some specialized papers and a inkjet/laser printer. Avery and Teslin paper both require post-processing after printing, so that the processing speed will be slower, but it will be much cheaper than plastic id card printers.

ID Card Size:
ID-1(CR80):
ID-1 were defined as 3.370 inches wide and 2.125 inches high.
ID-2:
ID-2 are not very commonly used, it were defined as  4.134  inches wide and 2.913 inches high.
ID-3:
ID-3 are widely used for passport.as known as B7 size, the sizes of ID-3 is 4.921  inches wide and 3.465  inches high.
ID-000:
As known as SIM card size,  it were defined as 25 mm wide and  15 mm high.
CR100:
CR100 usually used for military applications and conventions. it were defined as 3.88 inches wide and 2.63 inches high.
CR-79:
CR-79 were measured as  3.303  inches wide and  2.051  inches high.  it is little bit smaller than CR-80, usually used for clamshell proximity cards.
Thickness of ID Cards:
In ID card industry, the unit of measuring thickness for ID cards is: mil. 1 mil = 0.001 inches.

In general and also based on ISO/IEC 7810,  a standard ID card should have a thickness of 0.03 inches(0.76 mm or 30mil), but considering costs and the purpose of use, in many situation, we will use cards with smaller thickness than the ISO standard, for example: if you would like to create ID cards that more flexible then the 30 mil standard ID cards, you may use 20-24 mil cards for production. business cards would use 10 mil cards because of the price, and some membership cards also.
